MARC UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
The Minority Access to Research
Careers (MARC) Program offers research
training to participating students to help prepare them to compete
successfully for entry into graduate programs leading to the Ph.D.
in the biological or sciences or other related biomedical discipline or into a combined MD/Ph.D. program.
Funded through the National Institute of Health,
the MARC program aims to increase the diversity of scientists and to prepare a diverse group of students for careers in biomedical
research and/or teaching.
SUMMER
INSTITUTE
MARC students receive an initial eight-week summer laboratory-training
program. An important component of the summer workshop is the preparation
to independent research in a participating faculty laboratory. This
workshop is devoted entirely to an intensive laboratory and lecture
class in the methodology and concepts of modern biology and chemistry.
Emphasis is placed on developing skills that are necessary for research
participation. MARC Fellow can also choose to participate in extramural
research during the summer. The summer program starts late June and runs through mid August.
CONTINUING RESEARCH
After completing the summer program students engage in a mandatory
intensive research project in a participating faculty member's laboratory
during the academic year. Course credit can be arranged by approval
of faculty. Students have the opportunity to present their research
findings at national conferences and symposiums. Participants can
also apply for the MARC Pre-doctoral Fellowship, which covers the
expenses of graduate study.
