The University of California Santa Cruz has participated in MBRS and MARC since these programs were first implemented since 1970’s by the National Institute of Health. We feel that we have developed effective methods for helping our minority students get into careers in the biomedical sciences. In the past 30 or so years we have had approximately 771 participants in the MARC and MBRS programs. More than 95% of these students completed undergraduate degrees in Biology or Chemistry fields. At least 141 students have subsequently obtained MD degrees and 19 have completed their DDS degrees. Currently, there are 23 students in medical school. Sixty-Two of our students have obtained the Ph.D. after our undergraduate program. Recently, we have been particularly successful in getting students interested in and prepared for graduate school. At the current time we have 35 students in doctoral programs. Our ultimate goal is to train students who will develop their own research programs, become faculty members, or become leaders in the biomedical industry. As our students move further along in their careers we are beginning to see that happen. Many of our former students are now teaching at colleges or universities and managing their own research labs. Several have obtained research grants from the NIH. Please go to the Alumni section to see profiles of a few of our alumni.
